Studio-style conservatory interior, fine steel glazing bar grid

Studio-Style Conservatory

Artist-studio-style conservatory: straight lines, wide glazing in a fine grid, custom steel frame attached to your home. Made in France.

Detail of a black steel profile

The studio-style conservatory borrows the vocabulary of early-20th-century artist-studio glazing: straight lines instead of a curved roof, wide glazed panels cut into a regular grid of slim bars, and a structure that shows its load-bearing role instead of hiding it behind mouldings. It’s a more architectural, less ornamental register than the Victorian style.

What defines a studio-style conservatory

The regular grid

Glazing is cut into a grid of similarly sized panes, repeated across the full height and width — closer to an industrial studio window than a conventional residential glazing pattern.

Straight lines

No curved roof or ornamental cresting: the roof stays single- or double-pitched, with crisp edges — a choice that avoids the complexity of curving steel but demands precise, consistent fitting along the straight runs.

Slim, visible bars

The steel frame stays visible between panes rather than hidden — it’s what gives the whole its character, provided the profile section stays slim without compromising the grid’s rigidity.

A steel structure, true to the studio vocabulary

Original studio glazing was riveted or welded steel, a material that allowed for slim sections timber couldn’t match. Our workshop follows the same principle: custom-fitted steel profiles, with a thermal break on exposed sections — a point that matters even more here, since a fine grid of glazing bars multiplies junctions, and therefore potential thermal bridges, compared with one large panel.

A style that suits both contemporary and period façades

Unlike the Victorian style, built to extend a 19th-century façade, the studio style works as well on a contemporary house extension as on a renovated farmhouse — the grid of glazing bars and straight lines read clearly against any existing building, which makes it a frequent choice in renovation projects.

Glazing is a separate choice from the structure

A denser grid of glazing bars has a direct effect on the glazing budget, since each pane is a separate panel to fit. Available glazing types and profiles, and their effect on insulation, are covered on our glazing and insulation page.

Frequently asked questions

Does the fine grid of glazing bars weaken the structure?

No, as long as the bar sections are sized for the grid chosen — that’s a calculation the workshop makes at the quote stage, not an aesthetic choice made in isolation from the load-bearing structure.

Is the studio style more expensive than the Victorian style?

It mostly comes down to how many panes the chosen grid has rather than the style itself — a denser grid means more glazing junctions, and more fitting time. See the detail on our pricing page.

Do I need planning permission for a conservatory in this style?

In most cases, yes — the rules depend on the surface area created and the zone (urban or not), not the architectural style. See our planning rules page for the applicable thresholds.
